It was reported that when spaceships passed through certain sectors, their audio systems would emit high-pitched, mournful wails. Thus it was believed that these sectors were haunted.

However, a courageous group of scientists explored these sectors, and found the source of the wails, space-faring creatures orbiting the sectors' stars or hovering near asteroid clusters. These herd creatures used electro-magnetic waves to communicate.

Further research revealed that the creatures, later named anglar-wailens, were silicon based. They also absorbed large amounts of metals by consuming asteroids, eroded by the digestive fluid they excrete into fine powder. This allowed them to create powerful magnetic fields which acted upon the magnetic fields of stars and planets, creating the magnetic force they use to navigate through space. Their naturally tough hides and sharp fins were used to cut through asteroids in their paths.

Their undersides are transparent, and several organs can be seen through murky liquid. While all of their hides can absorb the cosmic rays which they use for energy, the undersides do so with the most efficiency. And so when they orbit the stars, it is with their undersides turned toward the star. Their eyes and antennae are extremely sensitive to these cosmic rays.
